You must be pampering all your body parts as per the season and weather conditions, but unfortunately elbows don’t receive as much care as others. Elbows undergo the regular damage and stress when collided on chair arms, wooden desks, and other surfaces and also some health conditions (like atopic dermatitis and psoriasis) lead to chapped, dry and cracked elbows that look dark, dull and clumsy. Sometimes they can invite host of other skin problems like itching, redness, bleeding and also infections at the worst. Here are some simple home remedies that can provide you relief from cracked and dry elbows –
1. Lemon and Salt
This is one of the oldest remedies to treat dried elbows. Extract the juice of two quarter wedges of a lemon, make sure its fresh enough and add salt to the juice. Make a paste and then gently scrub the dried elbows with this in circular movements. It removes the dead skin cells and lemon being natural bleach lightens the skin tone as well
2. Brown Sugar
Take ¼ cup of brown sugar and about 1/8 cup of olive oil; mix it to make a thick paste. Use this as a scrub to treat your dry and cracked elbows. This sugar scrub will penetrate deep into the skin and give the needed miniaturization; you can wash it off after 30 minutes. One tablespoon of brown sugar when mixed with ¼ cup of honey, it makes an excellent exfoliating remedy for elbows.
If not anything you must be having Vaseline at home, just apply it generously on the dry elbows and leave overnight to see the magic. However, this massage should be done every night for about 2-3 weeks to retain the effect and suppleness. It’s also recommended after bath or shower.
4. Lemon and Baking Soda
Lemon as said before is an excellent natural bleach and it also exfoliates the skin gently. Mix fresh lemon juice and baking soda and create a thick paste; apply this to the dry elbows and then gently rub it into the skin in circular motions for about 5-7 minutes. Allow this to stay for around 15 minutes and wash this off. Follow up by applying Vaseline in the area.
This is a quick fix remedy for cracked elbows. Take a spoonful of butter and let it melt in the microwave heat. Apply the warm butter into the elbow skin and leave it for few hours. Since butter is colourless and odourless you will not have trouble doing other chores with this application on. Repeat this for 10 consecutive days and see the results.
6. Castor Oil and Oatmeal
You can simply add castor oil to the water before bath, which will give considerably good results or else massage castor oil on the elbows. You can also add castor oil to oatmeal powder and apply on itchy and irritable, dry elbows. This mixture again can be added in bath water for a soothing effect.
