Those of us with acne often think that acne is a problem caused by oil or sebum. This is true, because sebum does in fact contribute to acne, however we make the mistake of thinking that just because of this acne moisturizer is not required. The fact is that a moisturizer for acne is required, because oil and moisture are two different things.
The reason that even with acne moisturizer is required is because when we use anti acne products they tend to dry out our skin and our skin reacts by producing even more oil or sebum, which in turn exacerbates the situation! So a proper moisturizer for acne is actually indicated, though with acne prone skin one needs to be careful about what kind of moisturizer to use.
Since a good quality acne moisturizer can actually help keep acne under control, make sure you pick the right kind by looking at the factors –
1.Use a moisturizer for acne that has no perfume. It is very often the perfume ingredients that react badly with skin and may contribute to breakouts.
In fact a lot of irritating chemicals get added to cosmetic formulations under the general term ‘perfume’ or ‘fragrance’ such as prabens and so on
2.Look for oil free products that are light and easily absorbed. The general rule of thumb to follow withanti acne moisturizers is to go with lotions rather than creams – they have a higher water content, are lighter and easier on the skin, while not leaving a greasy layer on the skin.
Ideally a moisturizer for acne should be non-comedogenic (designed not to clog pores) and hypoallergenic (designed and tested not to cause allergic reactions)
3.A moisturizer with ingredients such as alpha hydroxyl acids will help with cell turnover. These are the same ingredients that are found in anti wrinkle products since they help to smooth out fine lines and reduce appearance of wrinkles as well. Since they help to exfoliate dead skin cells from the surface of the skin they help with acne as well.
They help remove a not just surface impurities but also help smooth the skin and make the appearance of acne less evident
4.Look for an acne moisturizer with certain ingredients that help to improve skin condition and nourish it. Many experts advice that a products that contain copper peptides, essential fatty acids, vitamins A and C are good for acne prone skin. They stimulate cell growth and so help to reduce inflammation, one of the key factors in causing acne.
5.One of the mistakes that people make is to think that the sun will dry out their skin and get rid of acne. The reverse can be true however, since the sun’s rays can cause damage and actually increase inflammation, worsening a breakout.
For this reason it is important to pick a moisturizer for acne with built in sun protection. An SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15 is very important to look for in your acne moisturizer because this will help protect the skin against sun damage and also against worsening of breakouts.
