Acne cysts are every teenager’s nightmare. Having these ugly skin irritations especially on the face is enough to make anyone want to stay home. They cause severe itching, swelling, reddening, and even pain.
So why are teenagers prone to acne cysts? What are the major causes of this terrible skin problem? Through the years, studies have been conducted to prove exactly what causes acne cysts. The results point to the following as the culprits behind acne:
1. Inborn genetic trait
If you are born in a family that is prone to have acne problems, then it most likely that you will have it too. Acne cysts are genetically heritable.
Whether you like it or not, you’ll encounter them at some point in your life since they are in your genes. However, you can take the necessary precautions to prevent severe cases from affecting your skin.
2. Hormonal imbalance
Another main cause of acne cysts is hormonal imbalance. This happens when the person has excessive production of sebum which clogs pores and causes acne. Hormonal imbalance usually occurs when a person reaches puberty.
This is when development is at its peak. Teenage girls are very prone to acne cysts before their period or when they get pregnant. Meanwhile, boys have growth spurts wherein they produce more testosterone than necessary.
3. Squeezing the pimple
Pimples are minor skin irritations but they can turn to acne cysts when not taken care of properly. Isn’t it tempting to squeeze pimples? Many people are fond of doing this without knowing that squeezing actually make pimples more susceptible to bacteria.
Once infection occurs, pimples will turn to acne cysts making them harder to treat. Squeezing can also leave acne scars which can only be removed surgically.
4. Skin care products
Another cause of acne cyst is the use of skin care products. Foundation, make up powder, astringent, moisturizer, and facial creams are just some of skin products people especially teenagers love to apply on their face.
These products contain harmful chemicals that can trigger the growth of acne cysts. The skin is very sensitive and you can’t simply use any product to clean it or make it beautiful. People have different skin types and using the wrong brand can cause severe damage to the skin.
The kind of lifestyle you have can affect your health especially your skin. Studies proved that smoking and drinking alcoholic drinks can cause acne cysts. Not only that but eating foods rich in carbohydrates, fats, and oils can also make the skin more prone to acne cysts.
Stress is another major cause to consider since lack of sleep and relaxation lowers a person’s immune system.
Acne cysts can be prevented. You can avoid them easily by following a strict diet. It is also important to practice proper hygiene and avoid stress. Most importantly, stick to the skin care products recommended by your dermatologist and never use products without consulting your doctor first.
