Hives manifest as small, itchy, swollen, red areas on the skin that may occur in clusters. If left untreated they may disappear within a few hours but new ones may appear in their stead.
The exact causes of hives are not known but it is generally believed that they are a response to the release of histamines inside human body. Histamines react to stress, food, infections, changes in temperature and sunlight and many other stimuli.
Though most hive outbreaks go away completely within a few days but you can also treat them naturally to relieve yourself from their symptoms faster.
This is not a serious disease, thus simple home remedies work effectively to treat hives. Below given are some natural remedies to treat hives:
1. Wet Cold Compress
Application of a wet cold compress on the hives to cool and reduce swelling of the inflamed skin. Lay a damp paper towel on the skin for 15 minutes at a time. Pain and swelling is greatly reduced by reapplication of the cold compress.
2. Reduce Stress
Hives can be caused by stress. In fact it can even make them worse. Yoga, meditation or some other form of progressive relaxation should be performed on regular basis to reduce stress. Chamomile, valerian or catnip teas have a sedative effect and drinking them can soothe stress.
3. Herbal Tea
Drinking herbal teas is a cure for hives. Green tea has a lot of health benefits and one of them is antihistamine effects. Licorice root may reduce hive inflammation and helps the body’s immune system to recover quickly.
People having high blood pressure, heart conditions or taking certain medications should refrain from the consumption of this root. Drinking Chamomile tea is also a common treatment for hives.
4. Oatmeal Baths
Soaking the afflicted area in a warm oatmeal bath relieves itching and sooths the skin. This is more helpful if the hives cover a large area or concentrated on your legs or lower body.
5. Aloe Vera
Topical application of aloe vera to the hives and the surrounding areas is greatly effective. It heals the skin and reduces the chances of the surrounding areas to develop hives.
Cut off the skin of a fresh piece of ginger and gently daub the exposed meat onto the effected area for relief. Place the ginger in refrigerator first to get an added cooling effect.
