Welcome to the world of products, treatments and promises. Yes, many people are under misconceptions about the acne treatments promised by various companies with respect to their products.
Misconceptions may be in the form of over expectations from the products, in an eager to treat their troublesome acne.
Surprisingly many of these products have no scientifically-proven effects. This is true. But in spite of all this happening people still get carried away by the ad world. They try to be doctors by themselves doing all sorts of experiments and surgical trials on their skin prone with acne.
Generally speaking successful acne treatment give little improvement within the first week or two; and then the acne decreases over approximately 3 months, after which the improvement starts to flatten out. If you hear or see ads saying get rid of acne in just 1week or 2weeks then there are undoubtedly disappointing.
Any mode of acne treatment will work in 4 different ways.
- First of all it starts normalizing shedding into the pore to prevent blockage
- Then kills P. acnes (Propionibacterium acne)
- Produces antinflammatory effects
- Does hormonal manipulation
It is proved that a combination of treatments can greatly reduce the amount and severity of acne in many cases. Be very cautious about any side effects of any type of acne treatment. If you think that a particular type of treatment is working wonders then also keep in mind that it may also have its side effects too.
Some of the acne treatment methods include exfoliating the skin, use of topical bactericidals like benzoyl peroxide cream, topical antibiotics applied externally such as erythromycin, clindamycin, Stiemycin or tetracycline aim to kill the bacteria, oral antibiotics used to treat acne include erythromycin or one of the tetracycline antibiotics (tetracycline, the better absorbed oxytetracycline, or one of the once daily doxycycline, minocycline or lymecycline). Trimethoprim is also sometimes used
Hormonal treatments have also shown an effect in treating acne. Birth Pills! In females, acne can be improved with hormonal treatments. The normal combined oestrogen/progestogen contraceptive pills have some effect, but the anti-testosterone cyproterone in combination with an oestrogen (Diane 35) is particularly effective at reducing androgenic hormone levels.
Oral retinoids help in reducing the secretion of oils from the glands. This is done by a daily oral intake of vitamin A derivatives like isotretinoin (marketed as Accutane, Sotret, and Claravis) over a period of 4-6 months.
Laser surgery has been in use for some time to reduce the scars left behind by acne, but research is now being done on lasers for prevention of acne formation itself.
So better to approach a doctor if you are facing severe acne problem before the situation becomes out of control meaning a stage where treatment becomes highly impossible.
