After a long, hot day outside the safe custody of your home, you find that you have rendered your scalp sun burnt. It can be a particularly painful situation as a sun burnt scalp is likely to undergo peeling and flaking as it heals. Now, though the preventive measures include wearing of hat or scarf the moment you leave your home, you have to recover from the situation once you have made the mistake of stepping out of your home hat-less. This is the main objective of this article- to make you aware of the treatment methodologies that prevent peeling and blistering of your sun burnt scalp.
A green rinse will ease the stinging skin of your sunburned scalp. However, the treatment is more helpful if applied within the first 24 hours. Soak a green tea bag in hot water for about 10 minutes and allow it to cool until it’s lukewarm. Pour the green tea mixture over your damp hair and start massaging it onto your scalp. Do not wash your hair after application.
Aloe Vera possesses a cooling effect which soothes the burn and prevents peeling. Gently massage about 2 teaspoon of aloe vera on your scalp and keep it for 30 to 60 minutes. Then, rinse it out with cold water.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Make a mixture of one part water and one part apple cider vinegar. Apply the diluted mixture on your damp hair and let it soak in your hair for sometime. Repeat the treatment twice daily until the burns have sufficiently healed. Apple cider vinegar has an acid content which draws the sting of the sunburns out and prevents blistering.
Do not apply alcohol based shampoo and conditioner until the sunburns have healed. Keeping alcohol away from your strands will be helpful during this period because alcohol causes the blisters to sting more and has a drying effect on your scalp skin which promotes itching and flaking.
When your sunburned scalp starts to peel avoid scrubbing and picking the skin of your scalp as it can cause the development of bacterial or fungal infection. Try to keep your scalp moisturized by using hydrating oil which may help to keep the flaking to a minimum.
During this time, it is important to prevent further sunburns and hence you must wear hat or a scarf regularly to prevent the heat from scorching your scalp. Follow these tips and use after-sun shampoo or conditioner to alleviate the conditions.
