Sodium Laureth Sulfate or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, are usually the main ingredients in any shampoo you are likely to have used, and it is these two varieties of sulfate that are getting a really bad rap these days.
Sulfates, a lot of people claim is irritating to the skin and scalp and some say it is downright dangerous, causing anything from hair follicle damage and skin corrosion to liver toxicity to permanent liver damage!
Wonder how so many of us are walking about seeing things clearly with a hale and hearty liver then! Probably because we don’t drink the stuff?
Using a sulfate free shampoo, it is contended, will be less irritating to the eyes, and will not strip the hair or its natural moisture. Proponents of sulfate free shampoo[ hair shampoo] also say that you don’t need to condition your hair after you have used a sulfate free shampoo.
Problem is that these chemicals are also those that are responsible for the foaming action of shampoo, and without sulfate, you don’t get that satisfying foam that leaves your hair feeling squeaky clean.
So, if you can give up the satisfaction that suds provide and are willing to fork out a significant amount more for sulfate free shampoo, there is no reason why you shouldn’t give this a try!
