Acne Scars – Can Anything Really Help Get Rid Of Them? Part 2

In part 1 of this post we spoke about the different kinds of scarring that a person has, which will determine the sort of treatment that is obtained for it. Other than creams, lotions and gels, which may be used for cosmetic purposes and not just scar treatments, there are several other procedures that can help to get rid of deeper and more serious acne scars:

acne scarsChemical Peel: This is useful mainly for mild scarring only, where the deep pitted scars are not present.

This treatment involves the application of certain chemicals on the surface of the skin for certain duration and then removing it.

This removes the topmost layer of the skin and usually results in smoother skin. This treatment is used also by people with no scarring and is offered at salons as well.

Dermabrasion (Different from Microdermabrasion): As the word suggests, this abrades the surface of the skin (dermis) – here the topmost layer of skin is physically removed by first numbing the skin and then using a rotating disk that abrades and ‘sands off’ that damaged layer of the skin.

This treatment requires some healing time since it is painful. And for many people, the results are short lived; in some cases the scars reappear over time.

Laser Resurfacing: The aim of this procedure is much the same as Dermabrasion – however the surface of the skin is not removed using disks or pads – here lasers are used to smooth the surface of the skin by removing the top layer. This is a more expensive treatment and here as well, there is no guarantee that the scarring will not return.

Subcision: In this treatment, the upper layer of the skin is dethatched from underlying tissue. This lets the blood flow into the space created. Rolling scars are usually benefited by this treatment though more than one session of treatment is usually required.

Punch Treatments: This is a procedure wherein the scarred area is surgically removed and then replaced with a skin graft – this is known as Punch replacement.

One other kind of punch treatment involves the cutting out of the scarred tissue and then using the surrounding skin to stretch up and over the excised wound. This is then allowed to heal without the need for a skin graft – this procedure is known as a Punch Excision. Punch Elevation is a method where the scar tissue is cut loose from the underlying tissue and left to heal – this can elevate the skin depression and thereby reduce the scarring.
