Nails play an important role in enhancing the beauty and appearance of your hands and feet.
There are several nail problems that are caused due to hereditary factors, lack of proper care, negligence and vitamin and protein deficiencies in your diet.
White patches! White patches on the nails are due to the immature nail cells which are soft and reflect light and appear white.
The nail edge also appears white because it is not attached to nail bed and reflects light.
Also, a nail problem which causes nail plate separation from nail bed can cause white patches. White patches can be caused by fungal infection. White patches must be shown to the doctor for treatment.
Brittle nails! Brittle nails are a nail problem that is caused due to nail plate excessive dryness. Fat and water loss can cause the cells to separate which results in brittle nails. Household works remove the natural fats from nails resulting in brittle nails.
Nail polish removers dehydrate your nails, so you should not use too frequently. Massage the nail base with cream to have good effect on brittle nails. Massage stimulates circulation and protects the nails from becoming excessively dry.
Hang nails! Hangnails are a nail disorder which causes skin tears in nail folds and cuticle. The nail fold and cuticle tends to stick to nail plate as it grows forward.
When the cuticle stretches, it tears. Sometimes, nail fold skin cracks, especially when it is dry. Chewing the nails, biting the nails and picking the cuticle can cause hang nails.
The hang nails can be cured by keeping the cuticles soft with the help of massaging and regularly loosening it from nail plate.
Paronychia! Paronchia nail problem is caused by bacteria, fungi and some viruses. The nail folds get inflamed and become red, swollen and painful. In severe cases, pus may come out from nail fold.
The primary cause of paronychia is immersion of hands in water for prolonged time. It can be prevented easily if you keep your hands dry. Use gloves made of rubber and handle the nail cuticle carefully.
Ingrown toe nails! Ingrown toenails are one of the nail problems. If you do not cut the toe nail properly, penetration into nail fold occurs as it grows, causing pain, redness and swelling.
Ingrown toenails can also be caused by toe injuries that change the nail’s contour. Avoid ingrown toenails by cutting properly. Sometimes, surgery is needed to ease the pain and remove the wounded nail.
Nail fungal infections! Fungal infection is a nail problem which can occur in any part of the body. Fungal infection of the nails is called onychomysis. When you get this nail problem, your nails will be broken, discolored and thickened.
Treatment can be possible for fungal infections of nails. Mild infections can be cured with ketoconazole and griseofulvin. Severe problems should be diagnosed immediately and treatment should be taken from health care practitioner.
