You’re doing everything right: using high SPF sunscreen, using protective clothing to guard against harmful UV rays, even using anti UV sunglasses! But you may be risking cancer another way: danger may be lurking where you don’t expect it, at the nail salon.
According to Dr Roshini Raj, an assistant professor of medicine at New York University’s medical school and author of What the Yuck?! The Freaky and Fabulous Truth About Your Body, nail salons can add up to considerable UV exposure and may contribute to skin cancerrisk.
Those UV nail lamps that you place your hands under, so that your nail polish dries quickly, act as miniature tanning beds, we are cautioned, since they emit predominantly UVA rays that penetrate the skin more deeply.
So when you decide to go for that French Manicure, try and ditch the part where you thrust your fingers in the UV machine to dry your nail polish. And if you must use these machines, use them only very rarely.
