Rhinoplasty, nose-reshaping surgery, is one of the common cosmetic procedures.
This helps in changing the shape of the tip or bridge, increase (augmentation rhinoplasty) or decrease (reduction rhinoplasty) the size of the nose, change the angle between the nose and upper lip, etc.
Rhinoplasty is commonly a safe cosmetic surgery where benefits overweigh the side effects.
This procedure helps to correct the birth defects and also alleviates some breathing problems.
You can have such procedure when you are not satisfied with the size or shape of your nose.
Age, skin type, family background, and medical history are some of the important factors that are considered before going for surgery.
Before going for rhinoplasty, it is essential to discuss with your surgeon about what it is that you hate regarding the appearance of your nose, so that your surgeon can suggest what are the possibilities to correct your nose.
It is essential to ask your surgeon if any other additional surgeries are required for better appearance of your face, as some will go with chin augmentation along with rhinoplasty to better balance the facial features.
Rhinoplasty procedure takes a minimum of one or two hours to complete, but the complicated cases will take longer. This operation will be usually done under general anesthesia.
During rhinoplasty, the incisions are made inside the nostrils in order to reach the bone and cartilage. Your surgeon will give appropriate shape for your nose as you are desired by removing, adding, or re-changing the bone and cartilage.
For example, for reduction rhinoplasty it is necessary to remove bone or cartilage and for augmentation rhinoplasty, there is a need to add bone or cartilage from other part of your body.
If the tip of your nose is large, your surgeon will mold the cartilage of that area to reduce the size and at the same time the angle between the nose and upper lip can be altered with this procedure.
After the correction of your nose, dressings will be applied in each nostril for approximately 24 hours. Then, a splint will be applied on the nose to keep the bones in position and this will be removed after a week or two.
As anesthesia wears off, painkillers will be given to reduce uneasiness. If you have undergone augmentation rhinoplasty, you will need to stay in the hospital for about a week.
If the operation performed for you is augmentation rhinoplasty, it is necessary to do bone grafting from another place and a scar will be remained.
There will be a minimum amount of bleeding for a day or two days. After such operation, you will need to follow the instructions that were given by the surgeon or nurse.
With rhinoplasty, your nose will go numb, which will disappear slowly and you may also experience swelling and bruising around the eyes, which will decrease in three weeks. Because of swelling, you will find difficult to breath, but as the swelling settles down, you can breath well.
In some cases, one in ten people need further surgery after rhinoplasty.
